Problema al configurar GCC

Holas y FELIZ NAVIDAD  !!!! a todos los amigos linuxeros del planeta
tierra:

Saben estoy tratando de configurar el GCC osea instalarlo en mi sistema
pero para esto el manual del GCC me dice:

"when configuring a native system, either "cc" or "gcc" must be in your
path or you must set CC in your environment before running configure.
Otherwise the configuration scripts may fail"

Como hago esto ya que cuando doy la opcion de configurar me da la
siguiente respuesta:

[root@aqpnet /gcc]# /gcc-2.95.2/configure
Configuring for a i586-pc-linux-gnuoldld host.
Created "Makefile" in /gcc
/gcc-2.95.2/configure: cc: command not found
*** The command 'cc -o conftest -g   conftest.c' failed.
*** You must set the environment variable CC to a working compiler.
