Tambien, maneja lo que es un commhttpd.conf, para cuando neceites mas de un apache o version de apache al mismo tiempo. Pero bueno, en está página encontraras mucah información util: www.lamp.org El httpd.conf necesita ser modificado para aceptar paginas del tipo index.php ??? Tambien, ya probaste que efectivamente funcion tu instlacion de php con una pagina simple como: <?php phpinfo(); ?> Si al cargar el anterior ejemplo desde una pagina, como ejemplo, mia.php en le locator del browser, no ta aparece nada es que tu php todavia no esta bien. Espero esto te sirva. Yo siempre he usado MySQL, nunca lo he intentado con otra dB.
