Microsoft admitted in an SEC filing on Friday that it expects Windows to face stiffer competition from Linux, the freebie Unix-based operating system favored by hackers and server geeks alike. Also announced Friday, Intel and Netscape are among several funders investing in Red Hat Software - though official word was due at ISPCon Fall '98 in San Jose, Calif., during a presentation on Linux's future in business, according to ZDNet. The New York Times led Monday's business section with a feature on Red Hat, the North Carolina software developer that has tried to build a business around selling Linux and developing software for it. ZDNet's Jesse Berst filed a column this morning - a sort of backhanded "I-told-you-so" laying out his vision of Linux's future. The piece is coupled with a late Friday story on the Intel/Netscape investment, which Robert Lemos called a "major symbolic blow to Microsoft Corp."
