With the GPL license (and some others) you can do that with no problems, the fact that a software product is free does not prohibit you to sell the product for money. > > Why is it that software has to be basically given away if it's open? Not really, and developing a free software product for a specific project for a specific client has some advantages like the client's ability to further customize the product to new special needs or the client's ability to fix some bugs in less than one day while the original developer could take more time to do the same thing if warranty applies mostly due to lack of enough time because of involvement in other projects. > I'm not > sure that anyone in Open Source has ever answered this question. I am not sure about Windows developers geting the fair amount of money for the sales of the Windows products, at least I haven't read in any newspaper about a Windows programer getting multimilionare because of the multimilionare sales of Windows products even though it should. The fact is that free software developers just need (like writers do) to get good contracts with good clients and then just start making money. Consultancy is also another good money source for free software developers because nobody else in the world knows a product better than the one who made it. -- I am not sure if multimilionare is correctly written, but as far as it's meaning is well understood I don't care at all....
